Rural tourism and cultural heritage
Course objective:
The aim of the course „Rural tourism and cultural heritage” is to provide students with an understanding of the characteristics of rural tourism, the role of cultural heritage in tourism and the possibilities of rural development. The course emphasises the acquisition of practical knowledge, and students will have the opportunity to take part in field trips to see successful rural tourism projects. The course also includes project work, where students can design their own tourism project.
During the course, students will learn about the relationship between rural tourism and rural development, the role of cultural values in rural areas for sustainability and the importance of rural development projects in rural areas. After completing the course, students will be able to develop rural tourism, to exploit cultural heritage in tourism and to plan and implement rural development projects.

Course topics:
1. Introduction to rural tourism. The concept, characteristics, short history and definition of rural tourism. Differences between rural areas and cities, ressources of rural areas.
2. The role of rural tourism in rural development, The relationship between rural tourism and other touristic products (cultural tourism, ecotourism, wine tourism, event tourism, active tourism, e.g.)
3. The role of cultural heritage in rural tourism
4. The concept and types of cultural heritage (e.g. built heritage, intangible heritage) Protection and sustainability of cultural heritage
5. Cultural values in rural areas (e.g. folk architecture, traditions, etc.)
The role of cultural values in sustainable development, Opportunities for the use of cultural assets in tourism
6. Rural tourism and cultural values in Hungary and in other countries
7. Tourism strategy for Hungary and the EU with a special focus on rural tourism
8. UN Tourism and ETC publications and recommendations regarding rural tourism
9. Project management:The importance of cultural tourism projects in rural areas; renovating castles, creating interactive museums, event spaces and other services
10. The role of sustainability and digitalisation in rural tourism
11. Management of rural destinations with cultural values, tasks and maintaining of DMO’s
12. The role of rural tourism in local and regional development
13. International best practices in rural tourism
14. Case studies, field research, project work
Conditions for issuing the micro-certificate upon completion of the course:
Students are assessed on the basis of their class work during the semester, their activity in class and their completion of the assignments. The grade awarded will be determined 50 percent by the presentation at the end of the semester.
Grading: Below 60% – fail, 60-69% – sufficient, 70-79% – average, 80-89% – good, 90-100% – excellent
